Rural Park Anaga, travelling into a forested park that seems like something out of a fantasy novel

Rural Park Anaga, Tenerife
There were lots of unforgettable moments on our trip to Tenerife, among them our visit to the Teide national park, sunny afternoons spent at the beach, and evenings dining outdoors enjoying the nice weather the Canary Islands offer year round, but one of the most magical and amazing things we did on our vacation was driving through Anaga Rural Park.

We began our trip in Puerto de la Cruz and drove down the Autopista del Norte until we got to the exit for the TF-13 which was one of the old roads that winds its way up into the mountains. Here the trees have grown together over the road to form a natural tunnel. You see rays of light filtering through the green leaves as you travel into a forested park that seems like something out of a fantasy novel. At various points along the way you can stop and take pictures. At one of these points we even saw a van where some enterprising soul had decided to sell bananas and fruit out of the back of his car.

As we continued up the mountain, navigating hairpin turns, we were also traveling through the clouds and then above them. And, by the time we had arrived at the “Pico del Inglés” we were literally driving above the clouds. We stopped the car and walked down a narrow bridge to get to a lookout point with a big rock. This was the type of rock that people climb up and feel like they are king of the world. This was the type of lookout that takes your breath away and the views are magical. The azure blue sky peeked through the clouds, and if you stood at the right angle, you could see the Teide volcano in the background. A true natural paradise.

We continued our ride towards Taganana and the beach following behind several other cars and a bus, stopping along the way to take photographs of the amazing views and scenery. We slowly came out of the clouds and began to see the ocean in the distance. I will warn you, however, that the turns are very tiring, and we had to stop the car a few times not only to enjoy the views but also to rest from such a winding path. When we arrived at the beach, we were greeted with a rougher, rocky shoreline that had nothing to do with the white sandy beaches we´d seen in the South of Tenerife. This was a more natural coastline, and according to the locals, one of the better beaches to avoid tourists.

We recommend a drive through the Anaga Park with a Golden Boqueron because these are views that you can´t find anywhere else. In fact, when we were looking out at the Teide from the Pico del Inglés, I was reminded of the views we had at the Grand Canyon, or in the Picos de Europa in Asturias. These are images that we won´t soon forget, the day we drove through the clouds and back to the sea. I’m sure you’ll be interested in finding an economical way to visit Tenerife and discover it for yourself.
